AEMS Library Graduate Assistant
25%-33% Graduate Assistant, Fall 2021

The Center for East Asian and Pacific Studies (CEAPS) is currently seeking a graduate assistant for our Asian Educational Media Service (AEMS) Library. An engagement program of CEAPS, AEMS promotes the understanding of Asian cultures and people through library collection and media programming for educators of all levels. AEMS introduces new documentary and independent films to scholars and students at the annual Film Expo held in conjunction with the Association for Asian Studies’ Annual Conference (AAS). The AEMS Library holds a collection of more than 6,000 media and curriculum materials from or about Asia available for viewing in the library or for loan to local patrons or patrons of the Illinois Heartland Library System (IHLS).

The AEMS library and AEMS program operations will be virtual in Fall 2021 and gradually transition to a hybrid model in Spring 2022. The AEMS GA will provide administrative, technical, and communication support for AEMS library operations and engagement. The appointment is 25% (up to 33% depending on workload) and is renewable, contingent upon his/her performance and funding availability

Duties and responsibilities

  • Serve as the main liaison with the Illinois Heartland Library System (IHLS); monitor library system data and updates; respond to phone/email inquiries
  • Support AEMS website and database migration and maintenance in collaboration with ATLAS and CEAPS team
  • Provide administrative and technical support for AsiaLENS programming, AAS Film Expo submissions, and CEAPS grant data collection.
  • Work with Illinois Heartland Library System to barcode new acquisitions in Polaris and send items for cataloging as needed

(After library re-opening)

  • Maintain regular hours at AEMS Library, at least two days per week.
  • Manage AEMS library circulation; check outs/returns/re-shelving of materials in media library
  • Monitor AEMS library and VASP office reception in coordination with CEAPS office manager

Required qualifications: Attention to detail, punctuality, dependability, and communication skills.

Preferred: Background in Library Science, East Asian Studies, East Asian languages, humanities, media, or education; familiarity with Adobe Suite, Drupal, Webtools, and basic database and web management tools.
